Holiday Luminarias

A nearly miraculous accomplishment is successfully performed each year over a three day period in late December. The Fountain Hills Chamber of Commerce hosts the lighting of the luminarias. At first glance, the idea doesn't seem too miraculous, but when you hear just how many we are talking about here, jaws tend to drop. The Chamber, along with numerous volunteers, line many of the major streets of Fountain Hills and the shores of Fountain Lake with thousands of luminarias on each of the three nights.

Luminarias, an ornamental southwestern tradition, date back for centuries. The small lighted paper bags are assembled and distributed along literally miles of community streets. The efforts payoff with the sunset. After dark, the serenity and peacefulness of the little illuminations poke through the darkness like a million little campfires.

Being a desert community, Fountain Hills rarely gets snow. If snow does fall, it blankets the surrounding mountains and not the community itself, then quickly disappears with the morning sun. This special tradition adds just a bit of holiday spirit to the community filling the void that snow would generally fill around the holidays. Between the luminarias, the residents' own holiday decorations, and the Lighting of the Avenue, the town always has a "home for the holidays" atmosphere in December.
