Roosevelt Lake Once considered the largest man-made lake in the world, Roosevelt Lake still reigns as the largest of the six Salt River Project lakes. At full capacity, the lake covers nearly 17,000 acres. Fed by Tonto Creek, the Roosevelt Dam restricts water flow into the Salt River. Recreational opportunities at Roosevelt Lake include swimming, camping, boating, fishing, picnicking, and sightseeing. Temperatures in the Tonto Basin area range from the low 20's in winter to around 115 degrees F.in summer. The drive from Fountain Hills is a real treat. Highway 87 climbs through the Mazatzal Mountains as it passes by Four Peaks Mountain and Mount Ord. At State Route 188, turn right. With the new rest area at this intersection, this is a great place to stop for a break in the drive. State Route 188 follows the shoreline of Roosevelt Lake for several miles passing by lodging, food and gas at Roosevelt Lake Resort, conveniences at The Spring Creek Store. Along 188 there are numerous locations to access the lake shore. Bachelor's Cove offers picnicking, camping, fishing, and boating. Cholla Boating Site also offers camping. Bermuda Flats Recreation Site is also a popular area, but from mid-November through mid-February it is closed by the Forest Service and Arizona Game and Fish Department for use as a refuge for geese. The Roosevelt Lake Marina offers personal watercraft, speed boats, fishing boats, pontoon, and bass boats for rent.
