The jeep and graded roads accessible off of Rio Verde Drive north of the McDowell Mountains are in fact future streets within the boundary of the City of Scottsdale. The area is sparsely occupied by homes so take caution when driving any of the roads. Always drive slowly. There is some beautiful scenery in this area. Quartz pinnacles, boulder fields, windy overgrown jeep roads, and mountain vistas are just some of the features visitors will encounter. There may be an opportunity for viewing wild mustangs, open range cattle, coyotes, javalina, deer, and other wildlife. Off of 128th street there are less traveled jeep roads that offer some great views. As stated earlier, this area is populated so be considerate by driving slow and stay off private property.
Though most of the area is accessible by low clearance vehicles, some areas, particularly where the road passes through a natural wash can be rough or even obstructed by deep ruts from rain run-off so take caution.
Remember to always have plenty of gas and a spare tire on hand. Be sure to bring enough water for all passengers for more than one day. Plan ahead, paying close attention to weather reports. Practice cautious driving and never attempt to cross flooded washes. Cell Phones may or may not work in this area so don't depend on them.
