History

The idea for the community of Fountain Hills began back in 1960 when founder, Robert P. McCulloch, purchased 4,500 acres of land northeast of Scottsdale from Page Land and Cattle Company. Originally part of the P-Bar Cattle Ranch, the acreage was to become a blossoming community. A designer named Charles Wood Jr., who had helped McCulloch build Lake Havasu City along the Colorado River years earlier, joined McCulloch in developing the community. Their vision was to include a memorable landmark for the community in the master plan. Today that landmark is internationally recognized as one of the worlds tallest fountains.

The fountain is surrounded by a 32-acre park which uses reclaimed irrigation water not only for the beautification of the park, but for the contents of the lake itself. The fountain is capable of shooting 560 feet into the air, over three times higher than Old Faithful Geyser in Yellowstone National Park and nearly 10 feet higher than the Washington Monument.
See Fountain for more information.

McCulloch had acquired nearly 12,000 acres by the early 1970's and was selling property to buyers from all over the country who had heard about the fountain, clean mountain air and the vision of the planners. Fountain Hills was founded on December 15, 1970. The community continued to grow and incorporated as a town in 1989.

In the mid 1990's, authors of the book Fifty Fabulous Places to Raise a Family recognized Fountain Hills for its unique quality of life, helping the community grow to its current population. See General Statistics.

Parenting magazine also gave their two cents worth in an article published in a 1997 issue. Editors selected the community as one of their top 10 picks for families.

Today Fountain Hills is a beautiful, thriving "small town" community with endless opportunities for enriching professional and personal quality of life.

NOTE: In the spring of 2002 the Fountain Hills Historical Society will unveil its new "River of Time Museum" which will showcase the history of Fountain Hills and the surrounding area. The museum is part of the new Community Center and Public Library complex near the corner of Avenue of the Fountains and La Montana Drive in downtown Fountain Hills.
