New Community Center and Library Open
The project encompasses two facilities, a new 31,000 square foot Community Center and the new 21,000 square foot Fountain Hills Branch Library, run by the Maricopa County Library District. Finishing touches are still being added including work on the north parking lot, sidewalks and landscaping installation, but the interior and exterior of both buildings are complete. Adjacent to the Library, in the same building, the Fountain Hills & Lower Verde River Valley Historical Society is planning to construct the River of Time Museum. The facility, slated to open in the spring of 2002, will showcase the history of the Lower Verde Valley, as well as host traveling exhibits. The project's 20-year development process began in 1980 when the community developer, MCO Properties, deeded the land for the project to the unincorporated community. The visionary Fountain Hills Civic Association began planning for the site shortly thereafter. In 1989, the community of Fountain Hills became an incorporated municipality. Support for the project continued with each elected Mayor and Town Council. On June 2, 2000, the official ground breaking took place marking the first stage of construction. Community residents watched as the complex took shape, but were asked to remain off the property until the official ribbon cutting celebration. As the completion date approached, excitement mounted with the realization that this long-time dream was about come into fruition. On September 29, 2001 the center was introduced to the community and became a day that will forever be a historical turning point in the development of this young community. The celebration was attended by hundreds of citizens and dignitaries. Guest speakers included former Mayor John Cutillo, former Mayor Jerry Miles, and present Mayor Sharon Morgan, the local Pastoral Association, town staff, project architect, Rob Dietz of HDA Architects, and others who were closely involved in the creation of the project. Later, those who attended were invited outside for a historic community photograph.
The new center is located on the west end of a large piece of property that was set aside in the Fountain Hills Master Plan for a downtown. Plat 208 is located between the Avenue of the Fountains, La Montana Drive, El Lago and Saguaro Boulevards. The new community center provides a new, quality facility for holding events, meetings, and banquets. The new library provides a beautiful, state-of-the-art facility to residents.
