On March 12, 2002 Fountain Hills will vote to elect a new Mayor and three new Councilmembers. Early Voting begins February 7, 2002. As a service to the community we have compiled detailed information to assist in this process. Running for Mayor is incumbent Sharon Morgan and candidate Jon Beydler. Morgan has served the community for two consecutive terms. Two Councilmembers, Sharon Hutcheson and John Kavanagh, are running for re-election while Councilmember John Wyman has decided not to seek a another term. Besides Hutcheson and Kavanagh, the race for the open positions includes Mike Archambault, Kathleen Nicola, Bruce Hansen, and Hugh Henry. Councilmembers Leesa Fraverd and Susan Ralphe will continue there terms while John McNeill has recently announced he will step down from his Town Council position in March due to out-of-state relocation. McNeill has fulfilled two years of his four year term. The council will be reviewing applications and conducting interviews for the position. To qualify, candidates must be a Fountain Hills resident for one full year and be a registered voter. For further information contact the Town of Fountain Hills. Voters will also be faced with the decision to impose a $2.4 million dollar property tax. The tax would more than likely finance the takeover of the fire department although the funds would be placed into the general fund and are not dedicated to this purpose. There is also a spending limitation increase on the ballot that if approved will give the Town Council authority to spend additional revenues for town projects. The ballot question will ask for a one-time increase of the spending limit cap to $20 million. The current fiscal year spending limit is just over $14.5 million.
