Luminarias, A Tradition in the Hills

Few Southwestern holiday traditions are more warming and welcoming than the lighting of luminarias. Before the use of electric lighting became common place, these tiny magical bags filled the cold desert nights with their soft auburn glow. This classic Southwestern tradition lives on, here in the Hills.

From December 22nd to the 24th, the Fountain Hills Chamber of Commerce recruits volunteers to assemble, distribute, and light more than 5000 luminarias in downtown Fountain Hills. The small paper bags filled with a scoop of sand and topped with a candle are distributed along city streets, sidewalks, and all the way around the banks of Fountain Lake. Each night, the volunteers, equipped with a lighter and extra candles, venture out to their designated areas to refresh and light each luminaria.

The Lighting of the Luminarias has not only become a community tradition, but many residents have made volunteering to distribute and light the candles their own holiday tradition. It is a special way for families and friends to get in the spirit of the season while spending quality time together.
