With an unlimited supply of dry timber the two fires spread and by June 22 had consumed more than 165,000 acres. On June 22, The Chediski and Rodeo fires had now grown to a total of more than 200,000 acres. The communities of Heber and Overgaard were hit hard by a wall of flames that consumed entire neighborhoods. Fire officials reported that though many homes had succumbed to the fire, many more had been saved due to the efforts of firefighters. As the week progressed, crews worked around the clock bulldozing containment lines and setting controled burns. Efforts to contain the fire at Hop Canyon, southwest of Show Low, failed triggering the evacuation of some 11,000 residents of Show Low and Pinetop-Lakeside. Back to: Home
