Motorcycle Road Trips:
Grease Wood Flat

There are few places in the area that compare to that of Grease Wood Flat. Hidden among the desert brush and surrounded by some of the most valuable property in all of Scottsdale, lives one of the coolest joints around. If you happen to be driving by the sign and a bug splats on your windshield at just the right moment you could actually miss it. Yep, that bug is dead and you think he's got it bad. You just missed one of the valley's best kept secrets.

Why do we use the word "lives" when referring to a dining establishment? Well, Grease Wood Flat has more personality, more attitude, and more character than most people do. This rusty old joint is filled with just about everything you can imagine. If it rusts, its probably there. If it weathers, it is probably there. If it can be found at a junk yard, it is probably there, too. Make no mistake, though, Grease Wood is no dump. In fact, some of the best burgers you'll ever eat are grilled up in their kitchen. Between that and an ice cold one while listening to live music by a bonfire, you can't beat it anywhere in the county.

Grease Wood Flat in past years was mostly a biker hangout. In recent years, however, word has gotten out about what a unique place it really is. Nowadays the place is hopping with activity.

Most likely, if you consider yourself a biker and live here in Arizona you have already been to Grease Wood. If you haven't then you probably aren't a real biker so get off that hog and go cryin' back to mama.

Getting your duff to Grease Wood Flat.
Head north out of Fountain Hills on Fountain Hills Boulevard which turns into McDowell Mountain Road. Sit back and enjoy the ride. Eventually you'll come to Rio Verde at the intersection with Forest Drive. Turn left. Pass through Rio Verde and then Tonto Verde. Just past Tonto Verde turn left on Rio Verde Drive. Follow Rio Verde Drive until it intersects with Alma School Parkway. Turn left. Watch for the signs for Reata Pass. Just past Reata Pass on the left side you'll see a sign for Grease Wood Flat (See photo of sign below). If a bug happens to splatter on the window just after Reata Pass then you might need to turn around. If not, you've made it.
