Take A Hike!
Mazatzal Mountains
Tonto and Coconino National Forests

Hikes into the Mazatzal Wilderness, pronounced "Mah-zaht-zahl", are ideal in fall through spring. Elevations within the wilderness range from 2,060 feet along the Verde River to 7,903 feet on Mazatzal Peak. There is an extensive hiking trail system throughout the Mazatzals including access to the Mazatzal Divide Trail that traverses the crest of the range.

Established in 1940 and expanded to its current size in 1984, the Mazatzal Wilderness derives its name from an old Indian culture in Mexico. It means land of the deer.

There are several popular trails in this area including the Half Moon, and Rock Creek Trails in Barnhardt Canyon. The trails take hikers along the northern edge of the mountain range. Early on in the hike the trail enters into Barnhardt Canyon. This area mainly consists of boulder hopping. Beyond the boulders the trail continues through grassland areas until reaching Rock Creek Trail. At around 4 miles, this is a good place to turn around and head back to the trailhead. For those who have a bit more energy and time, continuing on is a treat. Heading further on, the trail climbs a ridge between Rock and Alder Creeks. The trail becomes more difficult as it climbs the long ascent up the mountain. About 6 miles into the hike the trail enters an area of rocky cliffs and outcroppings. Here hikers encounter a waterfall cascading down the rocks. The trail continues on to Mazatzal Divide Trail, but for this day hike, turn around and head back the long decent to the trailhead.

Brief Hike:
The out and back hike to Rock Creek Trail is about 4 miles each way.

Extended Hike:
The out and back hike to the waterfall rock wall is about 7 miles each way.

No permits are necessary to hike or camp in the wilderness area, but there is a 15 person group size limit enforced year round.

To access the trailhead take Shea Boulevard east to the Beeline Highway (State Route 87). Turn left. Follow 87 about 47 miles to the Barnhardt Trailhead turnoff. Turn left and drive approximately 5 miles to the trailhead.
