Take A Hike!
McDowell Mountain Hikes

Tom's Thumb Butte

Access to Tom's Thumb Butte and East End Peak is best made via Rio Verde Drive and 128th Street which is a graded, unpaved road. Follow 128th Street to its end. Scan the range for a large rock pinnacle, shown below. Follow the jeep roads as far back as you trust your vehicle to clear. The road becomes very rough and is best passable with a high clearance vehicle near the back end. Park your vehicle and hike back into the canyon. An unmarked trail to the left of the boulder field climbs the back end of the valley along the east side of the giant boulders, and crests at a saddle. Follow the trail to the right and up to the butte. Some land in this area is Private Property. Please respect all posted notices.

NOTICE:
The area is now a part of the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. Please abide by all posted restrictions.
