Just below the rim, and beyond Kohl's Ranch along Highway 260, is a north turnoff for the Tonto Creek Recreation Area. The paved road leads to the Tonto Fish Hatchery. About half way to the hatchery facility is a parking area providing access to both Horton Creek and Tonto Creek. Parking is on the far side of the bridge over Tonto Creek.

A cool place to frolic in a permanent stream during the summer months of the valley, Horton Creek is fed by a spring that gushes from the side of a steep ridge. The water cascades down boulders into a peaceful pond lined with wild flowers and ferns. Below the pond the creek splashes through many small falls as it descends down the slope of the Rim to its confluence with Tonto Creek.

The only access to Horton Creek is by hiking trail, although, the confluence of Horton Creek and Tonto Creek is located right by the parking area. The trail begins within the Upper Tonto Creek Campground. To get to the trail head, walk back across the bridge and up the dirt road into the campground. At the top of the hill the trail begins on the left.

To Get There:
From Fountain Hills take Shea Boulevard eastbound to the Beeline Highway (State Route 87). Turn left and follow 87 to Payson. In Payson turn right onto State Route 260. Follow 260 just past Kohl's Ranch. On the left will be the turn off to the Tonto Creek Recreation Area.
