Waterways:
West Clear Creek
Coronado National Forest

West Clear Creek begins its descent out of the Mogollon Rim at the confluence of spring-fed streams draining from above the plateau. Collectively, these creeks join together creating a pristine waterway that overtime has carved itself deep into the side of the Rim. West Clear Creek flows southwest as it descends to its confluence with the Verde River only a few miles outside of the town of Camp Verde.

West Clear Creek Wilderness is considered by many to be an ideal backpack destination due to the remoteness of the area. Trails offer a range of challenges including required swimming. There are a number of trails headed into the area, some easy but long, others short but difficult. Either way, there are required creek crossings.

The easiest route into the area is from Bull Pen Ranch Trailhead. Though there is no required swimming on this end of the canyon there are required creek crossings. There is also a boulder feature that forms a natural rock water slide perfect for a summer dip.

Fishing is popular here with deep, shady pools and churning eddies. This waterway is a fly fishing enthusiasts paradise. Solitude with only the sound of the babbling brook and the occasional bird call create an unforgettable experience.

Getting to the Bull Pen Ranch is relatively easy. From Fountain Hills take Shea Boulevard to the Beeline Highway (State Route 87). Turn left. Follow 87 through Payson, Pine, and Strawberry. Climb the Mogollon Rim and turn left at State Route 260. Follow 260 to FR 618, which is only a few miles outside of Camp Verde. Turn right on FR 618 and follow the gravel road to FR 215. Stay right onto 215 to the end of the road at Bull Pen Ranch.

Another route into the area can be accessed from FR 142B. This trailhead is the beginning of Calloway Trail #33. The half-mile-long trail drops down into the canyon at a steep descent providing quick access to the canyon floor. Once at the bottom hikers are on their own. Cool water and shady side canyons await those who venture into this wilderness area.

Getting to the trailhead at the end of FR 142B is not so easy. From Fountain Hills take Shea Boulevard to the Beeline Highway (State Route 87). Turn left and follow 87 through Payson, Pine, and Strawberry. Climb the Mogollon Rim and turn left at State Route 260. Follow 260 to FR 144. Turn right. Follow FR 144 to FR 149. Turn left. Follow FR 149 to FR 142. Turn left. Follow FR 142 to FR 142B. If you happen to be driving a high clearance 4X4, Follow FR 142B to its end. If not, park here and hike the last mile to the trailhead.
