Fountain Hills Disc Golf Course

The tee on Hole 2.

Overview

The Fountain Hills Disc Golf Course meanders through grassy Fountain Park and around Fountain Lake. This lake contains the the world-famous Fountain for which our town is known. The park (and course) is covered in grass and has many lovely shade trees which provide both comfort and challenge to disc golfers. During most of the year it is very comfortable to play this course, but even summer mornings and evenings don't feel so bad with the cooling effect of the lakes and grass. Did we mention that it is FREE to play the course and no reservations are needed? Just show up with your golf discs and some paper and a pen to keep score!

The Course

The 18 hole, 5,784 ft course starts at the southern end of the lake and wraps around it counterclockwise, conveniently ending near the shops off of Saguaro Blvd. There is a practice hole at the start of the course where you can either warm-up if you are experienced, or practice first if you haven’t played before. The holes have circular cement tees and yardage signs at each tee-off. The baskets are made of a galvanized steel and therefore blend into the terrain fairly well, so it is advisable to print and bring the course map along when you play. The course map is current as of March 2010 and shows the new location of hole 12 compared to many of the maps currently on the internet and even at the park.

The tee on hole 5.

If you have previously played at courses that do not have water hazards, consider bringing extra discs or a method to retrieve the discs from the lake. Many of the holes get close to the lake, and some closely border it so the odds of getting a disc wet are pretty high (at least for this player!) The first two holes are particularly difficult as the lake parallels the fairway just to the left. On hole one a brave player would play the dog-leg OVER the lake. And if you try to stay far right, you still have the issue of your approach shot to the basket with a huge lake just a few feet behind the basket. Hole 3 features an elevation drop to the basket and a decent slope to the right into a not-so-busy street. To get to hole 4, traverse the parking lot on the east side of the lake and you will find a nice, flat hole. Hole 5 offers multiple paths to the basket, which you can’t see. You CAN see the multiple trees in front of you and if those trees could talk I am sure they would disapprove of disc golf. Holes 6,7,8 and 9 are in a beautiful section of the park and feature rolling terrain, shade trees and proximity to water. Hole 10 is in the far northwestern corner of the park and plays extra long as it is uphill. The rest of the holes reside in the section of the park between the lake and Saguaro Blvd. Thre is not as much water danger in this section, and three of the tees are from an elevated position by Saguaro Blvd that not only provides for soaring tee-throws, but also gives you a great view of the park and lake. Hole 18 is located on the north side of the shopping center on the lake.

After Your Round

When you are done playing disc golf be sure to stay and enjoy the park or some Fountain Hills hospitality at the local restaurants. The park itself is a fantastic place to picnic. There are shade ramadas, picnic tables, benches and many shade trees throughout the park and lots of soft, green grass. The 330 foot tall fountain runs for 15 minutes at the top of each hour from 9am to 9pm every day. In the shopping center to the west of the lake you can find Euro Pizza, Grapeables wine bar with appetizers, delicious gourmet Gelato at La Scala Creamery, or breakfast and lunch at the Octagon Café. On top of this there is an art gallery too. And the great thing is you can enjoy your food and drinks out on the relaxing back patio of any of these establishments with relaxing views of the park and the fountain!

Where to Park

The closest parking lot to the start of the course is a lot that is to the left as soon as you turn right on El Lago Blvd from Saguaro Blvd (if you are travelling north on Saguaro.) Please refer to the course map. Additionally you can take Panorama around to the east side of the lake and park in that lot. If you plan to eat or shop before or after your round there is also a large lot at the northeast corner of Saguaro and El Lago Blvds in front of the lakeside shops. Finally, if it is a busy weekend and the other lots are full, you can park along Panorama drive on the north side of the park.
