The East Verde flows from its origin, the confluence of several creeks below the rim, to its end, the confluence with the Verde River near Squaw Butte. Along the way the river carves through narrow canyons as well as wider valleys. There are several places along the East Verde for recreation including swimming, fishing and camping. Highway 87 crosses the East Verde River north of Payson. At the crossing there is a road that drops down to a shady park along the stream.
Another popular place along the East Verde is a camp and recreation area off of Houston Mesa Road (FR 199). FR 199 leaves the paved Highway 87 heading northeast about half way between Payson and the East Verde River crossing. There are three camp areas along FR 199 as it climbs toward the base of the rim.
